We believe education should respond to the world as it is - dynamic, complex and full of possibility.

We see brave learners who, through nature and community, understand and value the world around them and the strengths within them so that they can become fulfilled individuals and active, compassionate citizens.

Our Story

How Akasha Began or what happened when a teacher and a conservationist stopped looking for what was wrong…and bravely started asking ‘what if?’

It was the end of winter 2018. Maybe August was to blame, the windy month stirring up ideas with the scent of rain and sowing thoughts with the promise of spring. Whatever it was, a bold decision was made in a small, local coffee shop. Two friends, Kerry (a teacher) and Tess (a conservationist), decided to stop seeing problems and to start seeing possibilities.

Tired of systems that no longer served children or the planet, they stopped asking “What’s broken?” and instead asked, “What if school could be different – on purpose?”

That day, “What if” became their mantra. What if school was a place children genuinely loved to go? What if learning felt joyful, meaningful and alive? What if curiosity came first?

By the time winter officially ended, the idea of opening a school had taken root – not as a rebellion against what was broken, but as a commitment to what was possible.

And so Akasha was bravely born. A learning studio rooted in connection, creativity and courage. Where questions matter more than answers and where learning grows wild, deep and real.

At Akasha, we are always asking, ‘What else is possible?’

Rooted in nature. Grounded in community.
Growing strengths and agency to live
courageously, curiously and compassionately.

SPACE TO GROW

At Akasha, we create SPACE for children to lead with wonder, ask questions, explore with purpose and grow through experiences. It’s not just a word, it’s how we hold learning. This approach is grounded in Five Living Principles:

  • Strengths – Start with what’s strong.
  • Purpose – Make learning matter, make it meaningful.
  • Action and Agency – Learn by doing.
  • Community – Grow through connection.
  • Environment – Learn from and with nature.

Why the name Akasha?

In ancient Sanskrit, Akasha means “space”, “sky” or “ether” with its root words being “A” (toward) and Kasa (to be visible, to shine). It is the space that holds everything and the element of possibility, openness and connection.

We chose the name Akasha because that’s what we wanted school to feel like.

  • A space where children are free to explore who they are.
  • A space that holds their questions, creativity and voice.
  • A space that invites learning to grow naturally…not in straight lines, but in spirals, seasons and stories.
